If you saw my post on embracing minimalism, you know that I’m all about quality over quantity. I’m sure that many of us can relate to having a ton of clothes in our closet that we never wear. Either the items aren’t versatile, they’re falling apart, or we just simply don’t wear them. What happened to being in love with everything in your wardrobe?

That’s exactly what the capsule wardrobe is about — having clothing that you actually love and wear. A capsule wardrobe minimizes excess and creates room for clothing that you get use and your money’s worth out of. It allows you to embrace the concept of less equals more and makes it easier for you to save your money versus spending it. Here’s how I’ve been going about creating my capsule wardrobe and how you can create yours too.

Analyze your lifestyle.

Before you go crazy at the store, it’s important that you analyze how you’re spending your time. Do you spend most of your time during the week in an office or at school? How often are you serving in your church? Are the weekends reserved for hanging out with your friends or significant other? You want to take these things into account when you are picking your wardrobe pieces.

Make a vision board.

Create a vision board on Pinterest to collect your sources of inspiration. Peruse your favorite blogs and style sites to see how you can incorporate your favorite style guru’s style into your capsule wardrobe.

Assess your current wardrobe.

Is there anything in your current wardrobe that fits the vision you are going for? Pick out items that will serve well as you build your capsule wardrobe. This is a great way to audit your closet before you rid it of unwanted items.

Clear the clutter.

Now that you have assessed your wardrobe, it’s time to detox your closet. Make 3 separate piles such as “Love It," "Sell It", "Toss It.” There’s no need to hang on to pieces that you’ve barely worn. Purge them and keep it moving.

Make a shopping list of wardrobe staples.

When creating your capsule wardrobe, focus on being intentional. You don’t want to slip into the habit of buying things “just because.” Make a list of staples that you are looking to add into your closet. It might even be helpful to choose the stores you will shop at so you won’t get distracted while shopping.

Go for quality and timeless pieces.

Quality is always better than quantity. It’s better to invest at a higher price than to keep repurchasing cheaply made products. If you’re feeling a little uneasy about the price, calculate the cost per wear.

Total Cost of Item/ Estimated # of Days You’ll Wear It

Remember to go at your own pace.

You don’t have to throw all of your coins away at once. It’s totally fine if you go at your own pace. Allot yourself a flexible monthly or seasonal budget to build your capsule wardrobe. It’s definitely something that will be curated over time.
