Redefining Your Priorities

Redefining Your Priorities | Life Designer University
Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.
— Johann Wolfgang van Goethe

Have you ever thought about what matters most in your life? The life-giving things that will add value and impact to your life and the lives of those around you?

It’s easy to forget these things and succumb to idle living at times. You wake up, go to work and feel like a cog in a wheel, deeply wishing you could contribute to a larger purpose that you’re not quite sure of, only to come home to a lengthy to-do list and stifled passions that serve as reminders that you’re nowhere near where you thought you would be by now. In disappointment, you concede to the day and put off your to-dos in hopes for a better tomorrow.

But you don’t have to accept the hand you’ve been dealt. In moments like these, you can choose to fall asleep to the purpose that is embedded inside your very existence and the passions that are buried deep in your soul. Or instead of settling into your comfort zones and yielding yourselves to your to-dos, you can choose to wake up and prioritize what the Lord is calling you to do.

As believers, we’re not called to lackadaisical living. We’re called to live in the power of the Holy Spirit and make the most out of every opportunity that the Lord has given us. Therefore instead of idly accepting the hand we’ve been given, we have to understand and prioritize what the Lord wants us to do. (Ephesians 5:15-17) Here’s how you can do that.

Review your life’s mission

Before you can prioritize the things of God, you must have an understanding of their purpose. So go back and review your life’s mission. What is your purpose in life? And I’m not just talking about your job, passion, or role. And don’t just give me that your purpose is to “help others and build God’s Kingdom.” Your job, passion, and roles are only vehicles or containers for your purpose. And yes, your overall mission is to serve and build God’s Kingdom, but what is the unique way that He’s purposed you to do that? Understanding your purpose will give you foundation. From there you can cast the vision for your life to give you direction in your choices and decisions, and have clarity on how you are called to carry out that purpose and manifest that vision.

Gather your lists of to-dos

You can’t decide how to prioritize the important unless you have a list of what all needs to be done. Take the time to list out all that you want to accomplish. Then go through that list and identify the amount of time, resources, and capacity that you realistically need to get those things done.

Determine what matters

After you are clear on your life’s mission and have gathered your to-do list, I want you to assess how much of your list contributes to your life’s mission and goals. Oftentimes we go through life like we are at a buffet, adding things to our plate that look and sound good but don't truly nourish and sustain us. Ruthlessly go through your list and remove anything that doesn’t align with your mission and life’s vision. Doing this will help you determine the things that matter most and add the most value and long-term impact.

Prioritize the Important

Once you have determined what matters, prioritize those things. What are the top 3 things that you can do to make the most of the time and opportunities that the Lord has given you? A good amount of your focus, effort, energy, and time should be spent on these things. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to identify what should come first and start cultivating these things.

Knock your priorities out first

The things that matter least should never come before the things that matter most. Instead of doing busy work or waiting for the perfect time to working on your goals, act on these priorities first. Set aside to intentionally tackle the things that God is calling you to do before you do anything else. That could look like waking up 30 minutes to an hour early before work to spend time in the Word or start the business He’s been birthing inside of you. Or it could like carving out an hour after work to finally take up a hobby that you always wanted to try. It all comes down to being Spirit-led and doing what He’s calling you to do first.

We can’t live thoughtlessly, idly drifting through our lives and passively accepting the hand life has dealt us. To make the most of our time and God-given opportunities, we have to wake up and start prioritizing the things that He is calling us to do.
